Former French President Jacques Chirac to stand trial on charges of embezzlement

Case against former French President Jacques Chirac in the embezzlement of public funds by creating fictitious jobs transferred to the Paris court, reported Agence France-Presse.

Earlier, the Paris prosecutor sought to close the case because the alleged crimes were committed by Chirac before 1992 and, therefore, can not be considered time-barred years. In events 1993-1998, the same investigators failed to establish the guilt of the former president, considered the prosecutor's office.

However, the investigator decided to refer the case to court. Charges Jacques Chirac, who was mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995, and nine former senior officials presented the mayor's office in 2007. The investigation found they paid for the work of his assistants in the party from the city budget by issuing to work as employees of the City Hall.

In the period from 1995 to 2007, Chirac, as president of the country, enjoyed immunity from prosecution. The agency notes that Jacques Chirac will be the first in the history of France's former president, who will appear before the court.
